Frameworks and Models

There are numerous frameworks, templates, and models designed to help you create and deliver instruction.


  • Understanding By Design offers a planning process and structure to help guide curriculum, assessment, and instruction. Its two key ideas focus on teaching for and assessing actual student understanding and designing instruction with the "end in mind."  Learn more with this White Paper by UbD creators Jay McTiche and Grant Wiggins
  • CAST created the Universal Design for Learning framework so that learning experiences are thoughtfully designed to elevate strengths and eliminate barriers. Dig into their UDL Guidelines.
  • Problem / Project-Based Learning are teaching methods in which students learn by actively engaging in authentic and personally meaningful projects while solving real world problems. Learn more about what it can look like by heading to PBL Works. 
  • The Gradual Release of Responsibility framework intentionally  and gradually shifts the cognitive load from the teacher to the students using specific and planned instructional activities.
  • Ready for Rigor teaching draws on cutting edge neuroscience research to offer an innovative approach for designing and implementing brain compatible learning activities.
  • The Inquiry Design Model uses the Inquiry Arc from the C3 Framework to create one of our favorite structures for designing quality instruction. The C3 Teachers site has sample IDMs and support materials.
  • We have always loved the Digital Inquiry Group resources. You can find modified primary sources, compelling questions, and complete lessons ready to use.
